Appalachian Outfitters is conveniently located in downtown Murphy NC, just south of the confluence of the Valley River and Hiwassee River, where they join to form Lake Hiwassee. We are the closest outfitter to the lake and are located just a few miles from Hanging Dog Campground, one of the favorite destinations for people who enjoy outdoor recreation in Cherokee County, NC.

How to find our store
From the main intersection in downtown Murphy, go north on Tennessee Street for about two blocks. You'll find us on the right side of the street in a large brick building.
Kayaks and Paddling Gear
Appalachian Outfitters offers a range of kayaks and paddling gear for the boating enthusiast.
Cherokee County is a great place for anyone who loves kayaking, canoeing, and paddling. There are several large and publicly-accessible lakes in our county and two main rivers.
If you drive an hour or so east or west of Murphy, you'll find yourself in river rat heaven!
The Ocoee River is located west of Murphy and offers challenging whitewater adventure. It was the venue for the 1996 Olympics Kayaking events.
About an hour east of Murphy is the just-as-famous Nantahala River. It winds through the Nantahala Gorge and offers easy stretches for floating down the river on the current and some easier whitewater stretches.
You'll find your choice of hard-body or inflatable kayaks at Appalachian Outfitters. The hard body kayaks are more durable and may be the better choice for the adventurous whitewater enthusiast.
Inflatable kayaks are very popular for people on the go. They are easier to transport and lighter in weight, making them a good choice for smaller individuals and retired people.
Of course, if you have a kayak, you'll need other gear such as paddles, life jackets, and other necessities.
Fly Fishing Gear and Fly Tying Materials
Appalachian Outfitters is a licensed ORVIS dealer and we stock an extensive line of high-end fly fishing rods and gear and a huge selection of fly tying materials, tools, and supplies.
We don't try to compete with everyone for your fishing needs. For simpler fishing rods, reels, and lures, there are several businesses in Murphy that may have what you want. If we don't have it, maybe we can recommend another place for you to find it locally.
However, if you're a fly fishing enthusiast, then we're just the place you're looking for.
There's nothing quite like whipping a fly line back and forth and dropping your fly right in front of where you think that trout, bass, or pike is waiting.
Cherokee County offers lakes and rivers for anyone who enjoys kayak or canoe fishing, or you'll find many places to stand on the banks or wade in the water to reach the fish you're angling for.
At some point, if you love fly fishing as much as we do, you're going to want to learn how to identify the best flies for what you want to catch and eventually you're going to want to learn to tie them yourself.
Perhaps you're wanting to match the current hatch that the fish are already chasing, or maybe you want to produce a small work of art that other anglers will appreciate.

There are a lot of different activities related to camping and hiking. We have some of the camping supplies and equipment you need.
Unfortunately, we can't stock everything that every camper wants and we try to strike a middle ground. If you're looking for the cheapest camping equipment or the very best high-end products, we probably won't have them in stock, but if there is something you really want, we'll be happy to do our best to find it for you and sell it at a fair price. After all, there's no need to have to travel to one of the surrounding cities or order from out of state if we can help you find what you want and buy it locally.
From freeze dried food and light-weight cooking equipment for the hiker and back-packer, to heavier cooking and camping equipment, fuel, and other supplies for campers who choose to travel by boat or auto, we can supply what you need.
We stock compasses, maps, lights, and other similar items to help you find your way in the outdoors and come home safely.
